The Inner Bailey

The inner bailey in Norman times had ranges of buildings on all four sides; these were rebuilt in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

The photographs on the right show views from the east range look across the inner courtyard towards the keep, chapel and prison.

A fee is charged to view the inner castle and the keep, at the time of writing the charge was around £4, for an adult, £3 for a child and a £3 concession. You can check the current charge for gaining entry to this area by visiting English Heritage, (see "Castle Links" above).

Although you can have a very enjoyable day viewing the grounds and surrounding area without entering the inner castle, I would strongly recommend paying the fee as walking around the inner castle and keep, studying the information and artifacts available, and feeling the stone and woodwork gives you a real insight and feeling for the history of this fort/castle.
