Norman in origin and rebuilt in the fourteenth century, Constable's House provided accommodation for the custodian of the medieval castle. Sir Robert of Ashton was the constable of the castle from 1376 to 1381, and was responsible for the tower in the northeast corner of the bailey, (Ashton's Tower).
The residence lies below the north parapet and little survives today, beyond some fragments of the Norman vaulted basement. Seating has been placed here which affords an ideal situation for a picnic, or just to sit and admire the inner castle.
The Hall Range of Richard II's Palace was built between 1396 and 1399. The palace forms the south and west ranges of the inner bailey, with the great hall to the south and a range of apartments to the west.
