The first floor was the principal floor of the keep, constructed of timber, the old structure is visible to all who visit this area, the first floor was divided down the centre by a wall.
Today there are modern stairs to access all floors, but originally access between the remains of the old timber decks was obtained by a spiral stair in the southwest corner of the building.
The south room has two windows looking into the inner bailey where Constable's house can be seen on the left and the east range across the lawn.
The ability to see anything approaching from the sea from the top of the keep gave this castle another defensive edge. It is worth the climb to the top just to see the views.
