The Landgate

The Landgate

In its Roman phase the Landgate's form was similar to the Watergate, but its later history is different. Excavation uncovered remains of a Saxon timber building in the forecourt of the Roman gate.

A Norman gate tower was built in the northern half of the Roman opening, a two-storey structure of which the inner gate alone has survived. The outer opening was replaced in the 1320's, with an arch similar to that in the Watergate.

Three large openings above the gate, probably giving access to some kind of barbican or defence in front of the gate, were made in that time, or in the middle of the century. A stair, added by thickening the north wall, gives access to the upper room. A fireplace provided heat for the first floor room and part of the parapet survives in the northwest corner.
