a-squared Free

This is an excellent piece of software that will increase your security and will cost you absolutely nothing except for the time you spend downloading and installing it.

The authors of the software describe the software as follows:

Security must not be a privilege. Under this motto, Emsi Software provides the Malware scanner "a-squared Free" completely free of charge for private use. But it is not a very limited version, it is a full tool to clean your computer from Malware. Not only Spyware, as detected by classic Anti-Spyware programs, but also especially Trojans, Backdoors, Worms, Dialers, Keyloggers and a lot of other destructive pests, which make it dangerous to surf the web.

The perfect security enhancement

"a-squared Free" removes reliably:

Trojans, Backdoors, Keyloggers, Rootkits
Trojans and Backdoors provide strangers with access to your PC. Once a Backdoor is installed, an attacker can take full control of your computer. A Trojan is best described as a piece of software pretending to be something it is not - they often contain Backdoors, and usually arrive as email attachments. A Keylogger is a type of Malware that invisibly records all keyboard activity, whereas Rootkits hide on your PC and manipulate internal system operations. "a-squared Free" specializes in recognizing and eliminating these types of Malware.
Spyware, Adware, Tracking Cookies
Your personal data and information is worth a great deal of money to certain advertising companies. They have no qualms about smuggling software into your system, recording information and spying on everything you do. Adverts that change the start page of your browser also belong in the Spyware/Adware category. "a-squared Free" completely removes Spyware from your PC. Traces of Spyware in the Registry and Tracking Cookies are also recognized.
Worms, Bots
Worm viruses are currently one of the most irritating phenomena on the Internet. Usually transmitted as dangerous email attachments, worms send copies of themselves to all reachable destinations and cause great damage. Newer network worms/bots use security holes (Exploits) to infect a PC, and can reproduce at an astonishing speed. Without your knowledge, your PC is essentially transformed into a spam-sending zombie! "a-squared Free" eliminates worms from your PC and prevents them from doing any further damage.
Dialers
Dialers are small programs that change the Internet access number of a modem-equipped computer to a much more expensive number. Costs can rise as high as several hundred dollars per dial attempt. "a-squared Free" removes Dialers before they become active.

For further information visit the emsisoft site or you can download a copy of the free version of "a-squared Free" now, but do please make sure that you select the FREE version which is several items down on the SOFTWARE listing.

Add or Remove Programs (Unhide Hidden Components)

Taking control of the "Control Panel"

We all tend to, or we should, go to the "Add or Remove Programs" feature in the Control Panel when we wish to remove a program from our computer.  After all the process is relatively simple, Open the Control Panel from the Start Menu, click the Add/Remove Windows Components button on the left hand side, select the program we wish to remove.  However, did you know that Windows hides many programs from being shown on the Add and Remove interface?

This little trick will allow you to take back control of your computer and see all the programs that windows has hidden from you.  To unhide those Windows Components and put you back in charge of your computer so that you will be able to remove them in the future from the Add or Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel carry out the following instructions:

  • Click "Start/Search/All Files and Folders"
  • In the "All or part of the filename" box enter "Sysoc.inf" (without the quotes)
  • Click "Search"
  • When the search ends click "Yes, finished searching"
  • Highlight the file in the C:\WINDOWS\.. Directory
  • Click "Open the folder that contains this item"
  • Copy file Sysoc.inf and save it somewhere safe in case things go wrong
  • Double-click the original Sysoc.inf file, it will automatically open in Notepad
  • Press Ctrl-H to bring up the replace box
  • Replace the string, "hide", with ",," (remember no quotes), and yes it is two commas
  • Save the file as Sysoc.inf

You will find that after re-starting the computer all hidden components will appear in the Add/Remove programmes of your Control Panel.

You are now back in charge of your computer

Anti-Spyware

It is recommended that you install and use at least two anti-spyware programs to ensure you have the best protection, no one program can completely protect you from all the potential spyware and adware threats that proliferate the internet these days.

If you do not keep the spyware definitions updated the program is unlikely to give you the protection you need against Spyware, Adware, Pop-up Ads, Phishing Attacks, Hijackers, Rootkits, Trojans, Drive-By Downloads, Rogue Programs, Messenger Service Ads, Keystroke Loggers, Malicious BHOs, Dialers and much more, so you need to check regularly, at least weekly, to see if updates are available.

Use common sense when surfing the Internet.  Try not to be enticed into installing free software, or signing up for a free service, if it seems too good to be true, in all probability it is.  Always read the privacy policy and/or Terms of Service or License Agreement of any free software or free service before downloading or signing up.

As a general rule, free products and free services with extremely long, difficult-to-understand agreements filled with legal-terminology, usually have hidden problems for you.  Take care, take advice, think before you act and you should come to no harm.

If you do not have spyware installed, I would strongly recommend that you visit one or more of the following sites and download and install at least two spyware programs today:

  • Spybot - Search and Destroy
"The best privacy software available!". PC World and PCMag.com
  • Spy Sweeper
"Webroot's Spy Sweeper 4.5 is the most powerful anti-spyware tool we've seen" PC Magazine
  • Spyware Doctor
Try it to see why experts awarded Spyware Doctor the best Anti-Spyware of 2005
  • STOPzilla
Detects and Removes all forms of Malware...

For even more information regarding the selection and use of anti-spyware visit Spywareguide.

Anti-Virus

No anti-virus can protect you if you do not keep it updated.  Update your anti-virus at least twice a week.  Install and use only one anti-virus program, you can download programs by following a link from my recommended sites.

There is a plethora of anti-virus software to choose from, some you have to pay for and others come free, my experience is, unless you are in business, you will not gain a great deal from paying for the software.  For those of you who are interested in looking at a wide range of anti-virus software, I have selected a few sites from the vast choice available on the internet.

AVG

AVAST QUICK HEAL NOD32
FORTINET F-PROT F-SECURE AntiVir
KASPERSKY NORMAN PANDA PROTECTOR PLUS
EZTRUST NORTON PC-CILLIN VIRUSBUSTER

Installing more than one anti-virus program does not give you more protection.  In fact, installing more than one anti-virus program could result in reduced protection.

Auslogics Disk Defrag

Designed for fast optimization of hard disks, and it is FREE.

Why should you defrag your disk?

Your hard disk is probably the slowest item on your computer. The CPU and memory work much faster than your hard disk because they do not have moving parts, therefor it is imperitive that you ensure your hard disk is given the chance to operate at peak performance.

Fragmentation causes the hard drive disk heads to move more frequently when reading files this can lead to freeze-ups and system crashes. You should try to keep your disk drive defragmented and optimized to enable peak performance.

Auslogics Disk Defrag will:

  • Improve computer performance and stability
  • Increase your productivity - no more waiting for files to open
  • Defragment disks in only a few minutes
  • Present you with a useful disk fragmentation map and detailed fragmentation report
  • Support Windows XP Home and Professional, 2000/2003 and Vista

Defragmentation Explained

Fragmentation is caused by creating and deleting files and folders, installing new software, and downloading files from the Internet. Computers do not necessarily save an entire file or folder in a single space on a disk; the computer will save the data in the first available space. After a large portion of a disk has been used, most of the subsequent files and folders are saved in pieces across the volume.

When you delete files or folders, the empty spaces left behind are filled in randomly as you store new ones. This is how fragmentation occurs. The more fragmented the volume is, the slower the computer's file input and output performance will be.

Defragmentation is the process of rewriting non-contiguous parts of a file to contiguous sectors on a disk for the purpose of increasing data access and retrieval speeds. Because FAT and NTFS disks can deteriorate and become badly fragmented over time, defragmentation is vital for optimal system performance.

This edition of Auslogics Disk Defrag was designed specifically for the users of Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, as well as the new Windows Vista.

Back up Windows XP Activation Files

After you have activated Windows XP for the first time you can back up the activation files, which may save you going through Microsoft activation in the future.

To back up the relevant files:

  • Go to your C:\WINDOWS\System32\ folder and find the files called "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak"
  • Copy and paste these files to a flash or floppy drive or onto a CD-ROM, if you have more than one hard drive save the files to another drive.

To restore the files:

  • Start your computer in safe mode
  • Copy the files to your windows\system32 directory
  • Reboot your computer and you should be activated without the hasle of contacting Microsoft.

The above also works with Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Edition.

Please Read

Backing up the database

Any database that you depend on should be backed up regularly. The ClipMagic database is no exception. Furthermore, because ClipMagic is usually running all the time, if your system should crash or you fail to close your computer down properly, there is always a chance that the ClipMagic data will be corrupted, because ClipMagic wasn't given a chance to save everything and tidy up before shutting down.

It is therefore recommend you back up your ClipMagic database regularly. You can do this using File/Backup Database or setting the automatic backup option in Options.

For those that wish to backup manually or use an alternative backup program the following files represent the main ClipMagic database :

  • clipmagic.qdb
  • categories.qdb
  • clipdata.qdb
  • hotkeys.qdb
  • notes.qdb
  • rules.qdb
  • ruleseq.dat

These will appear in the directory you have chosen for your ClipMagic data directory. In Windows 95, 98 and Me the Data Directory defaults to the ClipMagic main program directory. In Windows NT, 2000 and XP the Data Directory will be in your Application Data directory (usually: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\ClipMagic). You can change the data directory under Tools/Options/Advanced.

If you find that ClipMagic fails to run and you receive the advice that the database is corrupted, and you have not backed up your data, go to the data directory and delete the content, you will lose all your data, but you will now be able to run the program. Remember to back up your data in future!

Context Magic

Extend your Context Menu and have more control over your files

Context (shortcut) menus are used for file management, the menu provides a set of default commands, such as "Cut" and "Copy", when you "right click" on the file.

Context Magic greatly extends the list of available features.  It is a multi-purpose context (shortcut) menu extension that allows you to copy or move files to folders that are most frequently used, such as "My Documents", "My Pictures", etc.

Context Magic can also be used to open files with programs that are not registered as default programs for the particular file type.

For instance, image viewer may be registered as the default program for image files on your computer. But if you wanted to edit a bitmap file you would need to launch an editing program to carry out the task, you can easily achieve this by using Context Magic. Just "right-click" on the file, point to Context Magic and select "Open Selected File With", then click "Paint" in the list of available programs.  (See image below).

Free Agent by Forte

Agent 5.0 newsreader and email program for managing your communications:

  • Agent 5.0 is Windows Vista Compliant
  • Agent 5.0 makes it easy to automate access to all your News Servers and NZB Sites while minimizing your connection costs.
  • Send and receive email with multiple POP accounts and multiple SMTP servers.
  • View, download, and organize your messages with ease.
  • Personalize and protect your identity in both email and newsgroups.
  • Buy or Upgrade to Agent 5.0 and receive a Free 3 Month APN Trial account with your purchase.

You can now download a Free 30-Day Trial of Agent 5.0 Newsreader + Email at www.forteinc.com where you can also obtain all the latest information on this excellent program.

Agent by Forte was available as Free Agent in the past, until Forte stopped supporting it. It was then produced as Shareware, and later as a fully licensed product, which is what you can download from their site today.

In the days when Agent was available free people preferred the programs fa16-121.exe, the last (16-bit) freeware version, or fa32-121.exe, the last (32-bit) freeware version of Free Agent. These did not have the nag screens of the later combined shareware and freeware versions.

In the later versions like 1.9x and 3.x, even if during the installation of the program you opted to use the free version only and chose not to try the shareware, you continued to be presented with nag screens whenever you invoked a menu item or a feature that was only present in the shareware version.

Some people may still be interested in looking at and trying out the old Free Agent, and to this end I have made downloads available from this sight. I have the following versions of Free agent available:

When Forte had Free Agent 1.21 on their site they also had installation instructions which I copied at that time, they stated:

Installing Free Agent 1.21

If you're upgrading from an earlier version of Free Agent, just do steps 3 and 4.

You should back up your Free Agent directory (if possible) before upgrading so that if any problems occur during the upgrade, you will not lose your existing Free Agent data.

  1. Run the program fa16-121.exe (16-bit) or fa32-121.exe (32-bit) to install Free Agent 1.21. Follow the instructions provided by the installation program. The same program will allow you to install a new version of Free Agent or to update an older version.
  2. If this is a new installation of Free Agent, the first time you run Free Agent, it will prompt you for the information it needs to operate. If you have been using another newsreader, it will be able to extract most of this information from that newsreader's configuration files.
  3. Once you have supplied the necessary setup information and Agent is operational, press F1 to display the online help. You may want to start by reading the "Getting Started" topic. To view this topic, click on the phrase Getting Started on the Agent Contents page or search help for Getting Started.
  4. The second time you run the program, it will ask you for permission to register you as a user. Please allow it to do this! This will let us notify you of any new releases as soon as they become available. Free Agent is freeware, so you don't have to worry about ever getting a bill. We just want to make sure our products find good homes, and keeping you informed is an important part of that.
  5. Enjoy Free Agent! If you have any problems, check our technical support pages for help.

Home Email Software Agent
Forte Carlsbad, CA
Copyright 2000, Forte

Remember, there is now no support on the Forte website for Free Agent so items 4 and 5 will no longer apply. I am confident you will enjoy using FreeAgent and that you will find it a fascinating program.

Free File Shredder

Remove files from your hard drive with the confidence that they cannot be recovered

With Free File Shredder you can remove files from your hard drive without fear they could be recovered. There are quite a few software tools today for retrieval of deleted files. Those tools, often referred to as "file recovery" software, are taking advantage of the shortcoming of the Windows "delete" command that we all use regularly to delete files.

The "delete" operation in Windows only removes bits of information from files so they appear deleted in the operating system. It is easy to retrieve the files using specialized file recovery software which is freely available.

In order to remove, or shred files permanently from your system you have to use a program that is capable of rewriting the files with a random series of binary data multiple times. This process is often called shredding. By shredding files, the actual content of the file will have been overwritten and the recovery of such a shredded file is mostly theoretical.

Be safe and shred your files with Free File Shredder

Graphic Formats

What does GIF, JPEG, JPG, BMP, and PNG mean?

Understanding what format to use when using graphic images can sometimes be daunting, hopefully this item will help you to better understand the process.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format

GIF has a maximum of 256 colors and is known as a "lossless" format which means it doesn't get blurry or lose sharpness when increasing or decreasing it's size.

GIF is a really good format to use for drawings, clip-art, icons, etc., but it is a poor format to use for images of digital photography because of the limited choice of color.

The GIF image is possibly the most popular image type used on Websites.  There are probably more GIF images in use on Websites than any other image format.

GIF images can be made transparent or animated, however it can "dither", this means it will mix two colors together to give the impression of another color.

JPEG/JPG

Joint Photographic Expert Group

The JPEG or JPG format uses compression to reduce the image file size by reducing the amount of detail contained in the image, this means that images with fewer detail compress well, while images with lots of detail compress less well and will in all probability suffer some loss of quality.

The amount of compression used can be controlled in many of the image editing programs available, but this may still lead to some loss of detail.

Due to the ability of the JPEG/JPG format to display in millions of colors, and due to the format's small file size, it is often the first choice for detailed images and photographs which are sent via email or used on people's Websites.  JPG/JPEG format is the second most popular image format in use on Websites today.

BMP

Windows Bitmap file format

BMP is the standard file format used by Microsoft Windows and this type of file can contain either 2 colors, black and white, or 16, 256 or 16.7 million colors.

Most Windows Bitmap files are not compressed, but it is possible to save 16 and 256 color images in a compressed format.  BMP files are by nature very large and the image quality is not noticeably better than that produced using a JPG/JPEG file.

Due to the fact that BMP and JPG/JPEG can both display millions of colors, the majority of users choose to use a JPG/JPEG file as the file size is much smaller and therefor easier to store, send by email or put on a Website.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG was produced as a replacement for the GIF format.  date it has failed to achieve this aim.

PNG is in use on the Web, and it is increasing in popularity, this is probably due to it's compression being fully "lossless" and it's ability to support up to 48-bit true color or 16-bit grayscale.  The fact that the process of saving, restoring and re-saving an image does not have an adverse effect on its quality may also be a factor in this format's increasing popularity.

And Finally

For the transmission of true color images, especially photographic ones, JPEG/JPG images are, at this time, probably the better choice.

Paint.net

Simple Photo or Image Editing

Paint.NET is free image editing and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools.

It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing.

The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality.

Problems with Windows

If you are experiencing major problems with Windows there are a number of things you may want to try before you carry out a full format of your Windows drive.

It is possible to "repair" your installation of Windows XP, to do so:

  • Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD drive
  • Start your computer with the Windows CD in your CD drive
  • When you see "Press any key to boot from CD..."
  • Press any key.

Your computer will now boot from the CD and will go through a series of scans of your computer, eventually you will see the installation screen:

  • Choose "Install Windows XP"
  • When the next screen shows choose "R"
  • The repair installation process will start.

If this does not resolve the problem you can:

  • Back up your "My Documents" folder as well as your "user account" folders
  • Choose "Install a fresh copy of Windows XP"
  • Select the option to install Windows into your current Windows directory
  • You will receive a warning that there's already an operating system installed
  • Choose to install to that folder.

Windows XP will now delete all the files and folders in the Windows directory including your "My Documents" folder as well as your "user account" folders, which you should have backed up before you started installing Windows.

All other files and folders on the C: drive should be un-affected by the above process, but your registry will be wiped out and the start menu will have very little in it, most of the programs you have installed will no longer work and those affected will need to be reinstalled.

Once you have reinstalled the programs everything should be back to normal, minus hopefully the problems you wanted resolving

There are a number of advantages to installing a fresh copy of Windows rather than formatting the drive, these are:

  • Windows will not require re-activation
  • The majority of files and folders remain intact
  • While the majority of programs will not work, they can be reinstalled into the same folders which should maintain most of the settings
  • Installing a fresh copy of Windows will often resolve any problems and takes less time than re-formatting the drive

You now have two options to try before reaching the "Format Drive" option.

Problems with Internet Explorer or Outlook Express

Reinstalling for Windows XP and Windows XP SP1

When a program isn't working properly reinstalling it will sometimes correct the problem. Reinstalling can replace missing or corrupted program files and sometimes this is all that is needed to get the program running correctly again.

It is not so easy to sort out similar problems with Internet Explorer or Outlook Express as Microsoft prevents you from reinstalling these programs if you are running a fully updated version.

There is a way to reinstall Outlook Express and/or Internet Explorer by fooling Windows into thinking you don't have them installed.  This requires editing the registry so do be very careful as you can cause harm to your computer if you fail to do it correctly, however, Microsoft Support has full instructions on how to complete the process, and if you follow the instructions carefully you should come to no harm.

PropertiesPlus

PropertiesPlus is a simple little program that adds extra functions to Windows Explorer's Properties Dialog Box including:

  • a right-click function that allows you to modify file extensions, attributes, and time stamps,
  • make changes for a single file, multiple files, or all the files in a folder,

If you don't know why you need to modify file attributes or extensions, then this program is not for you, but if you do change file attributes or extensions on occassions, PropertiesPlus makes the task extremely easy, and it has some other functions that you may find useful.

This program has been around since the days of Windows 95 and interestingly it works just as well in Windows Vista as it did ten years ago. The program is no longer on offer as the developer abandoned it some years ago, but lucky for you it is now available from this site.

PropertiesPlus works in all versions of Windows from Windows 95 through Windows Vista, if you want to try it out you can Download a copy now.

Removing Programs from Start-Up

Windows 95/98/98Se/XP

Automatically loaded programs can usually be found in Windows Startup.  To find and and remove these programs carry out the following;

If you you have Windows 98/98Se
Click Start, Programs, Startup
If you see the program you wish to remove, right click the program and click delete
If you have Windows 95
Click Start, Settings, Taskbar, Startup Menu
Click the Start Menu programs tab
Click the Advanced button
Click the Programs folder
Click the Startup folder
Highlight the program you wish to remove
Press delete on your keyboard
If you have Windows XP
Click Start, All Programs
Look for the Startup folder and remove anything in that folder you don't want to start with Windows
To remove program shortcuts from this folder, right-click on each and choose "Delete"

If you were unable to locate the program within the Startup folder or if after rebooting the computer this does not stop the program from automatically starting, then my advice would be to use a neat little program called Starter, I would not advise anyone to use Windows MSCONFIG unless they have received appropriate advice/training.

Most programs you install nowadays, whether from CD or from downloading from the internet, set themselves up to start when Windows starts.  Unless it's some type of system utility or Anti-Virus program it most likely does not need to be included in the startup.  Ensure that you pay close attention during the installation process of any programs and if you are offered the choice to "start this program when Windows starts" click "NO".

Programs that are automatically loaded into Windows memory take up free memory that could be used to run other programs.  This inappropriate use of resources is the number one reason for system crashes and program freeze-ups.

Restore Points - Removing Old and Creating New

(Windows XP Home and Professional)

Windows XP creates a restore point every 24 hours, it also creates a restore point when software is installed. As time passes, the System Restore folder can get very large and affect the smooth running of your computer.

Microsoft advises that the minimum storage you should allow for System Restore to function correctly is 200MB. Unless you monitor the Restore folder it could grow to double the advised 200MB, this could seriously affect the speed of your computer. While System Restore will purge itself of up to half its contents once it gets close to capacity you would be better off keeping this folder clean and up-to-date.

You will need a little courage when rectifying the situation due to the fact that the first step is to clear you System Restore folder completely.

To carry out this process you need to:

  • Click Start, Control Panel
  • Click Performance And Maintenance
  • Click System, and select the System Restore tab
  • When the System Restore dialog box opens, click the checkbox next to "Turn Off System Restore", then click OK
  • Reboot the computer to make the changes you've selected
  • This will completely clear the System Restore data
Now you need to:
  • Return to Control Panel, System And Maintenance, System Restore tab
  • Remove the checkmark in the box next to "Turn Off System Restore"
  • System Restore is now enabled
And Finally:
  • Open the System Restore Wizard:
  • Click "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", "System Restore"
  • Follow the onscreen instructions and set a manual restore point
  • System Restore will date this Restore Point for you, but you are advised to give the restore point a descriptive name, i.e. "AFTER CLEANING" or something to indicate to you that this is where you made a fresh start.

Screen Shots

How to produce them

Screenshots are a useful way to show instructions on your Webpage, or to send someone else information that is best understood as a picture, or to store instructions for later use by yourself, and they are simple to produce, no-matter which version of "Windows" you are using.

If for instance you wanted a screen shot of a finance programme to show on your page, the best method of producing it is as follows:

  • open your finance programme and display what you wish to show on your page
  • Click the PrtScr (Print Screen) key
  • Open an image viewer/editor (I prefer to use IrfanView)
  • Click Edit/Paste
  • Select "Save as" and give it a name and save it as a jpg/jpeg or gif file, for more information on these formats see Graphic Formats

If you don't have an image viewer or graphic editor, like PaintShop Pro, IrfanView, etc., you could use MS Paint, but why cause yourself problems?  Download IrfanView now.

This is a screenshot that was produced using Irfanview.

Irfanview Screenshot

It is preferable to save your screen shot as a jpg/jpeg or gif file as bmp files, (Bitmaps), are large and therefore not really suitable for use on the Web or for sending as an attachment with Email.

Now that you have produced your image you can use it in the same way as you use other images on your computer and Webpages.

Secunia PSI Free

Software Inspector

Highlights of The Secunia PSI:

  • The Secunia PSI will be available free of charge
  • Calculates your unique Secunia System Score
  • Automatically scans your computer
  • Enables you to update Insecure/End-of-Life software
  • Provides Direct Download Links to security updates & patches
  • Detects and advises on more than 4,200 applications
  • Direct correlation between thousands of Secunia Advisories and your specific system and software
  • Secure SSL encrypted connection to Secunia

How does the Secunia PSI work?

The Secunia PSI works by examining files on your computer (primarily .exe, .dll, and .ocx files). These files contain non-specific meta information provided by the software vendor only. This data is the same for all users, and originates from the installed programs on your computer - never from their configuration.

Main Screen of Secunia

After examining all the files on your local hard drive(s), the collected data is sent to Secunia's servers, which match the data against the Secunia File Signatures engine (https://psi.secunia.com/) to determine the exact applications installed on your system.

This information can then be used to provide you with a detailed report of the missing security related updates for your system.

The program, where possible, supplies an update link and full information on any files that may pose a risk to your computer.

Single or a Double Click?

Which Do You Prefer?

Windows XP Home and Professional are set by default for double clicking to open programs, short-cuts and documents.  If you want to speed up the process and change to a single click you can re-configure Windows XP to open programs, short-cuts and documents with a single click.

To re-configure:

  • Double Click on, (or right click and select "Open"), "My Computer"
  • Click "Tools" (on the toolbar)
  • Click "Folder Options"

Where it says "Click items as follows", select: "Single click to open an item (point to select)"

Now select one of the following two choices, whichever you prefer:

  • Underline icon titles consistent with my browser
or
  • Underline icon titles only when I point at them

Click "Apply" then "OK"

All Done!

Slow Computer?

Hints to get the speed back

If your computer runs like a snail with a brick on it's head, it may be due to you having too many programs loading up when you start Windows. You may not even be aware that you have these programs running in the background.  Software developers seem to feel that all their programs should start with Windows.  one can explain this strange quirk they have, maybe they think it is helpful to the end user, who knows?

What is known is that if you allow all the programs, that want to start with Windows, to do so, it will not be long before the speed of your machine reduces dramatically.  There are other reasons for poor computer performance, insufficient RAM, a full temporary files folder, or insufficient hard drive space, to name but a few, but, the main cause for computers performing poorly is having too many programs starting up with Windows.

The simplest way to access programs that start-up with Windows and to keep them from starting with Windows in the future is by using a very simple free program called Starter.

Starter

Get rid of those troublesome programs that slow down your computer - THE EASY WAY

This is a first rate program that I also mention in Removing Programs from Windows Startup, this lovely program manages the start up system of your computer and ensuring that only the programs you want to load actually do so.  You can DOWNLOAD the latest version here.

"Starter" is a startup manager, that allows you to view and manage all the programs that are starting automatically whenever Windows boots.  It lists all the hidden registry entries, as well as the common Startup Folder files.  You can choose to safely disable selected entries, edit them or delete them altogether, (if you know what you are doing).  users can even add their own entries.

Starter

Using Window's MSCONFIG is the suggested way to remove these files, however, MSCONFIG is not the friendliest of applications and will punish unskilled users severely.  "Starter" is a very user-friendly application and will give those of us who do not wish to take on MSCONFIG directly, an insight into this area of the computer's system.  Starter does give more detail about each program loaded to this area and features a friendlier and more understandable user interface.

"Starter" works with Windows 95/98/ME/2000/NT/XP. It's very easy and safe to use as whatever you do with it is reversible.

Trying to remove programs from the Windows Startup location, can be a terrifying experience, even for those with loads of experience, by using "Starter", those abbreviated process and program names are made somewhat clearer.  If you are still confused by the abbreviated names that Windows displays, and they can be confusing, this site will allow you to search for any process or application by abbreviation or name.

www.processlibrary.com

All you need to do is to copy the name and/or the abbreviation and paste it in the search box on this site and you should get back a full program name in plain English. Knowing the name of the program or process which is starting up with Windows can help you to make an informed decision as to what action to take.

These are some of the programs that you do not need to have starting up with Windows as these programs can be run from the start menu:

  • Browsers
  • Chat programs
  • Computer manufacturer's "system monitoring" programs
  • Digital camera software
  • Email Programs
  • Printer & scanner software
  • Programs you've installed, but not anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware
  • Registry cleaners

These are programs that you would not normally want to remove from your start up programs:

  • Anti-Spyware software
  • Anti-Virus software
  • Firewall software
  • Microsoft operating system files

Back to the top of the pageThe rolling apple snail from Pam Spencer.

Starting in Safe Mode

Safe Mode boots into Windows XP, but only in a minimalist version of the operating system, but it is often possible to use Safe Mode to fix Windows problems.

To boot the computer into Safe Mode you need to press the "F8" key as soon as the BIOS has finished its routine, this can prove difficult to judge so the recommended way of entering Safe Mode is to repeatedly press "F8" as the end of the start up routine approaches

If you are using a "wireless keyboard" you will not be able to activate Safe Mode unless you first replace the "wireless keyboard" with one that connects directly to the computer.

Pressing the "F8" key should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu", select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and your computer should start up in Safe Mode

Stickies 6.0c

What the author says:

Stickies is a PC utility I wrote to try to cut down on the number of Post-It notes I was leaving stuck to my monitor. It is a computerised version of those notes.

The design goal behind Stickies is that the program is small and simple. Stickies will not mess with your system files, or write to the registry. Stickies stores all information in a single text-based ini file.

Stickies will never support animated dancing figures, or play "Greensleeves". They are instead yellow rectangular windows onto which you can put some text notes. Once created, they will stay on screen until you take them away. Just like a real sticky piece of paper.

For more information visit this site, or if you just can't wait to download a copy this is the place to be.

System File Checker (Windows XP)

What is System File Checker (SFC) and how do you use it?

System files can become corrupted and when this happens you may find that your computer "Hangs" during the boot-up process.  If you re-boot the machine you may find Windows will correct itself and all will be fine.   However, after a number of unsuccessful re-boots you may have to use the "Safe Mode" to access your computer.

SFC is a utility you can use when you suspect that system files have been corrupted, changed or are missing.  You may suspect that this has occurred if you get errors on startup or during a Windows session.  SFC validates the digital signatures of all the Windows system files, and will restore any that have been changed or corrupted.

To run SFC:

  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Copy the following maroon coloured text
  • sfc /scannow
  • Paste the text into the text box that appeared
  • If you choose to type the text make sure you put a space between sfc and /scannow
  • Press "Enter" on your keyboard

Once running the system uses a small window to show progress and you will be asked to insert your "Windows XP Installation Disc".  The scanning and correcting process is not particularly fast and it will take several minutes to complete.

There are various switches you can use for scannow, if you wish to see them go to Microsoft Support, or look in the Windows XP Help System.
